Advice to Students and Parents from the AD (Athletic Director)
At Galena City School District you have the opportunity to participate in many extra-curricular activities. I believe that these experiences will help you develop a broader understanding of yourself while also benefiting from positive peer interaction. In an effort to help you plan for these occasions, I have put together a list that you may find helpful as you prepare for the upcoming school year.
Alaska School Activities Association bylaws and policies help guide us through the eligibility process for activities governed by ASAA. GCSD has a set of eligibility standards that go above the minimums set forth by ASAA in some instances.
- To participate each quarter you must have C’s or better and a 2.0 GPA at the end of each quarter. For fall activities Quarter 4 grades from the past year would apply.
- Weekly grade check for travel or competitions.
- Conduct and behavior must be exceptional to participate.
- Practice an Tobacco, Alcohol and Drug free lifestyle. ASAA TAD Policy is listed here.
- Have a current physical-good for 12 calendar months. If you can do this at your local clinic it will save you time before activities start. Get your health review/exam form here.
- Be mindful of any school transfer conflicts during the school year. Once you have attended a school for 15 days or participated in an interscholastic activity you’ve established residency. A transfer after that will require an ASAA waiver to be filed. Call 656-2053 if you have questions.
- Expect coaches and advisors to have a high level of commitment from you.
- Find some type of exercise routine to do over the summer/off season to help your body recovery more quickly after practices begin. Maybe do this with a friend to stay more committed.
I hope you take the step to get involved while at GCSD. I have had the honor of watching our students represent Galena in a very positive light for the past 11 years and look forward to many more. Go Hawks!
