Varsity Boys Basketball
Sidney Huntington High School & Galena Interior Learning Academy field a very competitive varsity boys basketball team. The Hawks compete in the Aurora Conference against Hutchison, Monroe, Eielson, Delta, Glenallen and Valdez. The Hawks won the 2008 state championship at the 2A level, then moved up from the 2A division in 2009, and have remained competitive at the 3A level, qualifying for the state tournament in the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
Varsity practice begins in December. The team plays a full conference schedule and usually competes in 1 or 2 invitational tournaments during the season. The Hawks games are broadcast on KIYU radio, and the Hawks have a strong fan base at home as well as in Fairbanks. When the Hawks play in Fairbanks, they sometimes draw more fans than the home teams do! In the 2010-2011 season the Hawks were coached by Mark Stordahl and Myra Harris. The Hawks are committed to excellence on and off the court.
Galena has a devoted fan base, first-rate radio coverage, 2 gymnasiums, 2 state-of-the-art weight rooms, an intramural developmental league, a group of students who are passionate about basketball, the Gun shooting training machine, excellent educational opportunities, and one of the best Athletic Directors in the state. Our coaching staff here is experienced, dedicated, competent, and knowledgable and our team plays a diverse schedule around the state. We have a strong group of young prospects entering the program. For students looking to take their game to the next level and play basketball in a positive and challenging environment, Galena is a good choice.
