What is the Battle of the Books?

Battle of the Books is a statewide Alaskan reading motivation and comprehension program sponsored by the Alaska Association of School Librarians.

The goals of the program are to:

  • challenge and recognize students who already love to read
  • encourage reluctant readers
  • broaden students’ reading interests
  • increase reading comprehension and fluency
  • inspire discussion and analyzing of literature
  • promote academic excellence.

How does it work?

Lists of books are chosen and questions are written for all grade levels by the Alaska Association of School Librarians. Students read the books, discuss them, and quiz themselves on the contents. For district competition they compete against GCSD students statewide, via audio-conference. Each question begins with the words, “In which book..” and the answer will be a title and author. The top three highest scores for each level go forward to state competition. For state competition, they will have a team of three and work with a coach. They will battle against other public schools across Alaska.
