Where is Galena? 
Galena is located 270 miles west of Fairbanks, 230 miles inland from the Norton Sound, and just 80 miles south of the Arctic Circle.

What is the population of Galena?
There are around 485 permanent residents in Galena, with as many as 250 temporary residents fluctuating between the GILA residential school and summer work crews for ADFG, BLM, and other research groups that use Galena as a base for regional purposes. 

How do I get there? 
Galena is accessed by regional airlines out of Fairbanks. Everts Air and Wright Air Service are the two options with daily flights.

 What is the difference between IDEA, GILA, and SHS? 

  • IDEA (Interior Distance Education of Alaska) is a statewide homeschool program that serves families across Alaska with offices in Fairbanks, Wasilla, Palmer, Eagle River, Anchorage, Soldotna, Anchor Point, and Juneau.
  • GILA (Galena Interior Learning Academy) is a comprehensive residential high school with vast CTE options for students from across the state, and is located in Galena on a former military base.
  • SHS (Sidney Huntington School) is the local Galena school that serves kindergarten through 12 th grade students in the community.
