The Madeline Solomon scholarship deadline is on May 2, 2022. Available to graduating seniors from Sidney C. Huntington School (SHS) High School, Galena Interior Learning Academy (GILA), and Interior Distance Education of Alaska (IDEA).  The funds are to be used for further education in honor of Madeline Solomon, a native elder and educator who believed in family, native traditions and education as a way to better life for people on the Yukon River.  Click here for more information from the Galena Education Association for 2022.  Please direct any questions to sutton.casey@galenanet.com.

The Sidney C. Huntington School is participating in Screen Free Week, May 2nd through May 8th. This is an annual, international celebration when families, schools and communities swap the digital entertainment for the joys of life beyond the screen. There is a full week of activities, including walking, biking, swimming, an activities fair, game night and family night!

We are pleased to announce the reward of the Activities Awards and Employee Acknowledge Ceremony.  The ceremony begins at 7:00 pm on May 3 in the Sidney Huntington School Gym.  This is ceremony is open to the public.

Senior Meeting

GCSD will be having a mandatory senior meeting on Friday, May 6th in the Composite Auditorium starting at 4:15 pm (or as soon as the second bus arrives).

SCHOOL CLOSURE UPDATE: Due to a water issue, SHS students in grades Pre-K through 8th Grade will not have school today Friday May 6th. 
Meals will not be served, and the bus will not be picking up Pre-K to 8th Grade students. SHS High school students will be attending school on the GILA campus, a bus will leave SHS at 8:45am for those that need a ride.

The community of Galena is invited to view the prom from 7-8:30pm on Saturday, May 7th at the community hall. The junior class along with advisors Katrina and Becca Huntington would like to THANK the community of Galena for all their support and sponsorship. Without you the prom wouldn’t be possible!

Dear SHS Families,

Our water issue is still unresolved, however we will wait until morning before announcing tomorrows PreK-8 schedule. I plan to make an announcement on or around 6:30am. Anticipate an automated call around that time. We will also post that announcement on various media.

Repairs to our water system have been completed. Pre-K through 8th grade students will attend school at the normal time today, Wednesday, May 11th.  The bus will be running at the normal time.  High school students will continue to attend classes at GILA to finish their final exams. High School students will return to SHS tomorrow, Thursday, May 12th.

Galena’s annual Graduates BBQ (Senior Dinner) will be held on Tuesday, May 17th, from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm in the Community Hall. This special meal is for all graduates and is hosted by the parents of SHS seniors. If you would like to bring food to share, please feel free!

There will be a Baccalaureate Ceremony held on Tuesday, May 17 at 7:00 pm at the Catholic Church in Galena. Baccalaureate is a time when families are able to give their thanks and it usually proves to be a moving ceremony.

*The graduation ceremony will commence on Wednesday, May 18th at the Sydney C. Huntington School (SHS) gymnasium. Students and GILA families will be transported to the SHS campus. The majority of GILA students will fly out of Galena on May 19th and May 20th.

Galena’s annual Community Picnic (aka “Last-Day-of-School Cookout”) will be held on Wednesday, May 18th, at the SHS campus. All families and the Galena community are invited!

The cookout will stagger start beginning at 11:00 am.

-PreK thru 1st grade students will go first.
-2nd & 3rd grade about 11:15 am.
-Middle school students along with 4th & 5th graders about 11:30 am.

-High school students will start at 12:04 pm.

Parents are welcome to take students home after lunch. For students needing a ride, the bus will take students home starting at 12:30 pm. High school students will be released when they finish lunch.

Graduation rehearsal will be happening on Wednesday, May 18, 2022 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Over the dates of May 19th and May 20th, GILA students and parents will fly out of Galena.
